Preparing for Liposuction: 5 Ways to Get Ready

If you’re considering liposuction, you know the procedure is designed to remove excess fat from your body. It’s been the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States for the last several years.
If you decide to undergo liposuction, your goal is probably to look better. So, why not do everything you can to maximize the benefits?
At Frederick H. Watkins, MD, our expert team led by Dr. Watkins specializes in liposuction to slim and contour areas of your body while preventing future fat buildup from occurring. Here are five ways you can prepare for liposuction to give you the best results.
1. Reach a healthy weight
It’s important to remember liposuction is designed to remove small, stubborn areas of unwanted fat, not a weight-loss procedure. There’s not a specific weight you need to reach, but you should be at a healthy weight several months before your surgery.
2. Build muscle
Once the fat is removed, you’ll want your muscles to be visible, but you have to build up and tone those muscles for them to show. Again, you should start this several months before your procedure. Building your strength can also help you heal faster — and it’s good for your overall health.
3. Maintain a healthy diet
Eating healthy before liposuction will help you heal better and increase your skin elasticity, which will help with both the procedure and results. Eat foods high in antioxidants and water like berries, healthy oils, and vegetables, and drink plenty of water.
4. Stop all forms of nicotine
Nicotine sabotages the results of your surgery. It constricts your blood vessels, which means less blood and nutrients make their way to the site of your surgery and dramatically slows your healing process. Smoking can also cause damage to your immune system, increasing your chance of infection.
5. Make preparations at home
Unless your job is physically demanding, you should be able to return to work in a few days after your procedure, but you’ll be restricted from exercise and strenuous activity for a month or so. Make sure you have someone to drive you home after surgery and stock up on your favorite foods and beverages.
You should also have plenty of comfortable clothes that allow you to move around without adding pressure to your body, and keep ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications on hand to help you recover.
